Youth sports are meant to be a fun, formative experience. But across the country, kids are leaving organized sports at alarming rates. According to the Aspen Institute’s Project Play, over 70% of kids drop out of sports by the age of 13. At the National Early Childhood Athletic Association (NECAA), we believe that doesn’t have to be the norm — and we’re committed to doing something about it.
Why Are Kids Quit Sports?
There are many reasons why kids walk away from sports, but a few common themes stand out:
- It stops being fun
When pressure to win overshadows the joy of play, sports can start to feel more like a job than a game. - Too much pressure, too early
Adults often push children into competitive structures too soon. Many kids feel overwhelmed by unrealistic expectations from parents or coaches. - Lack of quality coaching
Coaches who aren’t trained in child development can unknowingly create negative experiences — discouraging kids rather than inspiring them. - Cost barriers
Uniforms, travel, and club fees can be financially out of reach for many families, limiting access to quality programs. - Burnout and overscheduling
When youth athletes are funneled into one sport too early or have no downtime, they lose the energy and desire to keep going.
How NECAA Keeps Kids Engaged
At NECAA, we do things differently. We believe youth sports should be about growth, inclusion, and development, not just wins and stats. Here’s how we’re changing the game:
Development Over Competition
We focus on teaching core skills, character, and teamwork instead of fixating on scores. Our programs are built around age-appropriate progression that encourages kids to learn and improve at their own pace.
Coaching That Cares
Our coaches are not only trained in the sport—they’re trained in positive youth development, communication, and ethics. With guidance from leaders like our Director of Athletics (a former NFL player), NECAA coaches understand how to connect, mentor, and inspire young athletes.
Affordability & Access
We work to remove cost as a barrier. Through fundraising, sponsorships, and community partnerships, we strive to provide scholarships and low-cost entry points to all families, so no child is left behind.
Emphasizing Fun & Belonging
Our goal is to create environments where kids feel safe, valued, and celebrated—not just for their performance, but for their effort, growth, and sportsmanship.
- Family Engagement & Education
We actively include parents and caregivers in the process, helping them understand their role in supporting—not pressuring—their child’s athletic journey.
A New Model for Youth Sports
NECAA isn’t just about playing sports —we’re about building the future through play. By shifting the focus from trophies to transformation, we keep kids not only in the game but thriving within it.
Because when sports are rooted in purpose, kids don’t quit—they grow.
